Reposado — Spanish for "rested" — spends a minimum of two months and up to eleven months in oak. This is the spirit's first true conversation with wood: long enough for oak to round off blanco's sharper edges, but short enough that the agave still leads. The result is a golden spirit — soft vanilla and light spice layered over the bright, vegetal agave core.
Aging happens in oak barrels and many premium producers land in the 4–10 month sweet spot, where balance peaks before turning into the next phase.

Añejo — "aged" — requires a minimum of one year and a maximum of three in oak barrels. Here the transformation deepens considerably. Extended time in wood pulls out tannins, vanillin, and oxidation compounds, yielding richer notes of caramel, baking spice, and toasted oak.
The punchy agave character recedes and something smoother and more contemplative takes its place — which is why añejo draws frequent comparison to fine whiskey and slots naturally into spirits like an oak-forward old fashioned, though it truly shines sipped neat.

Extra Añejo — "extra aged" — must rest a minimum of three years in oak, and is the most matured category of all. Recognized as its own classification only in 2006, it acknowledges extended maturation as a deliberate stylistic choice rather than simply "older añejo." Years in wood produce a deep mahogany pour and a luxurious, layered profile — think dark chocolate, dried fruit, coffee, and well-integrated toasted oak. These are the most premium expressions in the category, built for slow sipping.
